Skype for iPad – released and pulled (again)

Written by zusman. Posted in Mobile, News

I’ve been eagerly waiting for Skype to make full use of the iPad screen. The iPhone version works alright, but it doesn’t feel right. The iPad specific app is actually pretty cool, it offers cool avatar views of your contacts. What’s best is the video conference mode, and it even works on 3G networks. Apple’s FaceTime currently works only on WiFi.

App Gets Yanked

Now, get this. A few hours ago Skype Tweets the following message:
Skype twitter message about removing Skype for iPad
And sure enough, now when I go to the app store I cant find Skype for iPad anymore. And its not the first time Skype has done something like this. A few weeks ago it released a video on YouTube showcasing the upcoming app – only to remove it shortly after.

Shady Marketing?

So while reading more about the new app and it being pulled, I came across the following comment from a user on Cnet.

BS marketing from Skype for removing iPad app

So what do you think? Is Skype inadvertently releasing apps and videos before their time, or is it part of a larger marketing ploy?

Location based music goes artsy

Written by zusman. Posted in Mobile

Bluebrain did a world’s first by releasing their music album as a location based app. The idea is simple, the music changes depending on which location you are in. The app is downloadble from iTunes and only works around a park in Washington DC.

Location based in music isn’t all that new – last year we saw SoundTracker popup. A service that uses your location to find people with similar music tastes close to you. Then there is Flowd (disclaimer: one of my clients) that combines geo-aware social networking with music, events and concerts. And there’s a list of other geo-location music services, but none can compete with the simplicity of Bluebrain’s new music album.
