Marketer reviewing Google Ads click data on a laptop

Most founders who ask about competitors clicking their ads are seeing something real: budget going out with no demos coming in. Sometimes a competitor is to blame. More often the cause is targeting, tracking or the landing page. This post shows you how to tell which one it is in about an hour.

Can competitors click your ads?

Yes. Anyone who can see your ad can click it. Google calls clicks made to raise an advertiser's costs invalid clicks, along with bot traffic and accidental clicks. According to Google's invalid clicks policy, you are not billed for clicks its systems filter out, and if it finds invalid clicks after billing, you get a credit on a later invoice where possible.

So a competitor clicking your ad once or twice a week costs you very little. The risk is a sustained pattern Google misses, or a competitor who searches your keywords every day to check your ads and clicks out of habit.

Signs a competitor is clicking your ads

Look for patterns, not single clicks. One odd visit means nothing. The same pattern every week does.

  • Repeat visits from the same IP or company. Check: Server logs, analytics, a visitor ID tool. Usually means: Strongest sign of a competitor, or of your own team.
  • Clicks with near-zero time on site. Check: Analytics, landing page sessions. Usually means: Competitor checks, bots, or a slow or broken page.
  • Spend spikes on brand or expensive keywords. Check: Google Ads keywords and search terms. Usually means: Competitors researching you, or broad match drift.
  • Clicks clustered in one city or at the same hours. Check: Google Ads location and hour reports. Usually means: Possible targeted clicking, worth a closer look.
  • High invalid click rate. Check: Google Ads Invalid clicks columns. Usually means: Google is catching it, and you are not paying for it.

How to check in Google Ads

1. Add the invalid click columns

In your campaign table, open Columns, search for "invalid", and add Invalid clicks and Invalid click rate. These show clicks Google already removed from your bill. A low single-digit rate is normal. A rate that jumps on one campaign tells you where to look.

2. Read the search terms report

If most wasted spend comes from searches you never meant to buy, the problem is targeting, not competitors. Our Google Ads keyword research guide covers match types and negative keywords for SaaS.

3. Check your conversion tracking

"No conversions" sometimes means "no tracking". Before you blame clicks, confirm demo and trial forms fire a conversion. See Google Ads conversion tracking for SaaS, and if your CRM and Google disagree on lead counts, read why Google Ads and HubSpot or Salesforce report different numbers.

4. Match clicks to visitors

Google does not show you the IP behind each click. Your website does. Compare ad visits (tagged with gclid or UTM parameters) against server logs or a company identification tool. If one company or IP shows up again and again from paid clicks, you have a case.

How to stop competitors clicking your ads

Exclude their IP addresses

If you know a competitor's office IP, exclude it. Google lets you exclude up to 500 IP addresses per campaign, or set exclusions at account level, which also covers Performance Max. This only blocks that network. It will not stop someone clicking from a phone or a home connection, so treat it as one step, not a fix.

Exclude your own team too

Your sales team, investors and agency checking "are our ads running?" look exactly like competitor clicks. Add your office IPs, and tell people to use Google's Ad Preview tool instead of searching and clicking.

Tighten targeting

  • Use phrase and exact match on expensive terms, and add negatives weekly.
  • Exclude locations where you do not sell, and check "presence" versus "interest" location settings.
  • Run ad schedules if your buyers search in working hours and odd-hour clicks never convert.
  • Keep Search separate from Display and Performance Max so placement waste does not hide in your Search numbers. Our Search vs Performance Max guide explains when each one fits.

Rethink competitor and brand keywords

If you bid on competitor names, expect them to notice and click back. If they bid on yours, your brand campaign may see more competitor visits. Read should SaaS companies bid on competitor keywords before you start or stop either.

Ask Google to investigate

If you see a pattern Google has not filtered, collect dates, keywords, campaigns and IPs, then submit an invalid click investigation through Google Ads support. Clicks Google confirms as invalid are credited.

Should you buy click fraud software?

For most B2B SaaS accounts, not first. Check invalid click rates, fix targeting and exclude known IPs. A tool is worth testing only when you see sustained patterns Google misses and the waste is clearly larger than the tool's monthly cost.

When it is not your competitors

In most SaaS accounts, competitor clicking explains a small share of waste. The bigger causes are broad match pulling in research searches, Display placements, landing pages that do not match the ad, and demo forms that ask too much. If your ads get clicks but no demos, start with Google Ads clicks but no demos. If leads come in but never buy, read Google Ads leads not converting.

A simple weekly routine

  1. Check invalid click rate by campaign.
  2. Review search terms and add negatives.
  3. Compare paid visits to your logs for repeat IPs or companies.
  4. Add confirmed competitor and internal IPs to account-level exclusions.
  5. Check that conversions are still firing.

FAQ

Can competitors click my Google Ads to waste my budget?

They can click, but Google treats clicks made to drive up an advertiser's costs as invalid. Its systems filter most of them before you are billed, and it credits invalid clicks it finds later.

How do I know if a competitor is clicking my ads?

Add the Invalid clicks and Invalid click rate columns in Google Ads, then look for repeat visits from the same IP or company in your analytics or server logs, clicks that bounce in seconds, and spikes on brand or high-cost keywords.

Can I block a competitor from seeing or clicking my ads?

You can exclude their office IP addresses, up to 500 per campaign, or at account level, which also covers Performance Max. This stops ads showing on those networks but not on phones or home connections.

Will Google refund clicks from competitors?

Google does not bill clicks it flags as invalid. If it finds invalid clicks after billing, it credits your next invoice where it can. You can also ask Google to investigate specific activity.

Do I need click fraud software?

Most B2B SaaS accounts do not. Check invalid click rates and fix targeting first. Software is worth testing only if you see sustained patterns Google is not filtering and the wasted spend is larger than the tool's cost.

Is my competitor clicking my ads, or are my ads just not converting?

Usually the second. Broad match, weak negatives, Display placements and a slow landing page cause far more waste than competitors. Check search terms and tracking before blaming clicks.
