IDC recently released a market report on how the smartphone market will develop from 2011 to 2015.
These numbers are best-estimates so should be taken with a grain of salt. But the trends are clear, with Android continuing to dominate the market (+40%) and iPhone enjoying a sizable chunk (~16%). Doubts hover on Windows and RIM with Symbian’s demise certain.
Whats really interesting is to see how these trends are already reflected in the ads from last year. Droid is going after the larger, but more techie market. iPhone is after a cooler lifestyle which people are willing to pay for. Windows is for the simpler, non-techies and Blackberry is … well they are cramming all past technologies into one with crossed fingers.

Very good points on how these phone makers position themselves. This a few years old, but very relevant still. http://www.iphoners.com/threads/iphone-marketing-plan.141/

Apple is the leader in great marketing! Remember last year’s viral video with a customer who wants an iphone? That said it all!

Thats true, they charge a lot, but thats also because they want that exclusivity in the brand. The video you mean is probably this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL7yD-0pqZg

Windows phone has mixed marketing reaction. I’m not sure what it will do in the future, but it maybe good for people who are not wanting too many features. I’m not having many experience with it, but it seems beautiful phone.

Windows does seem to be going after a market that’s in between iphone and android. But don’t forget RIM. According to RIM’s co-CEO, they want to focus quite a bit in the Asian market. Thats the impression he gave in the Dive into mobile talk last december. http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/07/mike-lazaridis-live-at-d-dive-into-mobile-with-the-playbook/

These numbers are strange, since its just based on so much guess work. Who knows what the market will be like in 2012.
